Note on this chapter

This chapter holds a single entry, and that is deliberate. Purpose-built ice and snow hotels are a very small category worldwide, they open for a few weeks a year, and several of the properties that would otherwise belong here have already been written up elsewhere in our records. Rather than pad the chapter with a property invented for the purpose, we list the one entry we can describe honestly and leave the rest of the sheet blank until another qualifies.

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt

Zermatt, Switzerland

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt is rebuilt each winter on high ground beneath the Matterhorn, a cluster of snow domes carved out and connected by short tunnels, with sleeping chambers, a bar and a small chapel among them. Because the structure is snow rather than block ice, interiors are matte and sound-absorbing, and carved relief work on the walls is renewed every season by the crews who build it. Guests sleep in expedition-grade bags on insulated platforms, and the whole village is dismantled by melt in spring. Access is by mountain lift and a short walk, which limits arrivals to daylight hours.
